# Unboxing Quick Start Guide

You just cracked the tin and found this page from the Quick Start QR code. Where to begin now? In just a few minutes, we'll have your new Shark Jack Display (the Shark) up and running. Let's go!

## Step One: Charge it up

Plug an ordinary USB-C power supply — like that of a modern smartphone — into the Shark's USB-C port. The LED will light <mark style="color:red;background-color:red;">red</mark> to indicate that it's charging.&#x20;

Once fully charged, the LED will light <mark style="color:green;background-color:green;">green</mark>.

## Step Two: Power it on

On one side of the Shark is an RJ45 Ethernet connector. On the opposite side is a rocker switch — which is also referred to as the button. The rocker can be pressed in 3 directions; up, down and in.

Power on the Shark by holding the button in for 3 seconds. Release the button when the LED lights green. It'll flash green twice, then turn off for 6 seconds (be patient). Then, the LED will blink blue to indicate that it's booting while the Hak5 logo is displayed on screen.

## Step Three: Complete the setup wizard

A few seconds later, the Shark will greet you with the first time setup wizard. Press the rocker switch down, as indicated by the on-screen arrow, to proceed.

The setup wizard will introduce you to the rocker switch. Press :arrow\_up: up or :arrow\_down: down to flip through the pages, and finally press :arrow\_left: in when prompted. There definitely isn't an easter egg here :wink:.

Decide if you want to autorun a payload on boot.&#x20;

If you choose *yes*, the Shark will boot into Attack Mode and immediately execute the payload that has been set as the default from its library. If you choose *no*, the Shark will boot into Arming Mode where you'll be able to select your desired payload interactively.

This setting can be changed at any time from the <kbd>Settings > Payload Settings</kbd> menu.

If you choose *yes*, the Shark will prompt you to set a timeout — during which you can cancel auto-running the default payload and instead enter Arming Mode.

Press in :arrow\_left: to select the cancel window value (the default is 5 seconds), or press :arrow\_down: down to choose Back or Save.&#x20;

As setup completes, you'll be reminded that all of the settings can be changed in Arming Mode, and reminded that firmware updates can be downloaded and installed over-the-air from the <kbd>Settings > System</kbd> menu.

## Step Four: Enter arming mode for the first time

It's important to get this next part right. Running multiple DHCP servers on a network is an easy way to break things. By default, the Shark will enter arming mode as a DHCP Server — great for connecting directly to your computer. If you'll be plugging the Shark into your LAN via a switch, you'll need to make a quick configuration change.

### Connecting the Shark directly to your computer

The first time you complete setup and enter arming mode, the Shark will start a **DHCP Server**. This is convenient when connecting your computer to the Shark directly from its Ethernet port (typically integrated on your computer's main board, or via a USB Ethernet adapter), as your computer can then automatically obtain an IP address from the Shark on its 172.16.24.x network.

### Connecting the Shark to your network (via a switch)

If, however, you intend to plug the Shark into your network, such as via a switch, then you'll most likely want to set your Arming Mode's NETMODE (network mode) to **DHCP Client**. In this configuration, the Shark will obtain an IP address from your LAN's own DHCP server. If that's the case, with the Shark's RJ45 Ethernet connector unplugged, follow these instructions:

1. From the main Arming Mode menu, use the rocker switch to scroll down and select **Settings**, then press the button in to enter the menu.
2. Use the rocker switch to scroll down and select **Arming Defaults**, then press the button in to enter the menu.
3. With **ARMING NETMODE** selected, press the button in to enter the menu.
4. Scroll down to select **DHCP Client**, then press the button in to change the default setting.
5. Scroll down to the **← Back** menu entry, then press the rocker switch in to confirm. Repeat this setup until you reach the main menu.

## Step Five: Explore, and run your first payload
